Fish poisoning: Food samples sent for tests; victims recuperate

Monday,Oct 3: Dozens of people who were hospitalised after consuming fish curry and fry in Ullal, Deralakatte and surrounding areas of Mangaluru taluk a couple of days ago, were discharged after recuperating. 
Medical sources said that a few of the food poisoning victims who were in a critical condition on Saturday are now out of danger moved out of intensive care unit. 
Nearly 200 workers of Baraka Fish Oil Mill in Ullal and dozens of residents in surrounding areas were taken ill on Friday night after consuming two specific variety fish of perch family known among local people as Cavage and Chamberi. 
While some reported of vomiting, others reported of giddiness and body pain after eating the dishes. Around 50 of them had got admitted to four different hospitals in next 24 hours. 
Samples sent for tests
Meanwhile, samples of fish dishes that led to food poisoning have been sent to Bengaluru for testing, said District Health Officer Ramakrishna Rao, who met the victims admitted in the four hospitals. 
“While some say that they purchased fish from persons who came to their area in vehicles selling parts of fish discarded from a fish meal unit in Ullal, a few said the dishes were prepared using fish they had purchased from the fishing harbour,” he said. 
A team of officials of the Medical Department on Sunday collected samples of the food that led to food poisoning and sent it to Bengaluru for testing. Apart from our department, Deputy Director of Fisheries and Food Safety Officer are inquiring into the cause of food poisoning,” he informed. 
On the other hand Ullal police said that they have collected all the necessary details like where the fish were procured from and sold. “We have submitted the details to the concerned authorities," said police sub inspector Shivaprakash. 
N Saleem, managing director of Baraka Overseas Trader, maintained that they are export-oriented firm and don't sell anything locally. "We transport fish waste that includes heads, thorns and other parts to fishmeal factories after processing of fish for export. The person who transports this waste might have sold this to local people and they have fallen sick," he said,
